Any way to check on the history of a used car for free?

Not free. Unless your DMV provides the info; mine doesn’t.

I am not aware of any cheaper alternative- unless a dealer or Carfax wants do you a favor.

Yes and no. YES… there is a way to check the hisrory of a car and NO… you can’t do it for free….

provides limited services for free, but of course charges for a more in depth report. However, $10 would be worth it if you can avoid buying a lemon – especially with the hurricane last year and many cars potentially on the road from that and other disasters.

Nope, no freebies.
Car dealers don’t get Carfax for free! They pay a substantial monthly subscription charge for unlimited access. They’ll often pull one for a car that you’re interested in buying from them without any charge to you, but they’re NOT free!
